Explanation

This website is about the genealogy of the Hoes and Hoefs family.
That genealogy consists of six independent families, most of them originated in the Netherlands.
They are named by the village or region where the eldest ancestor has been found, Berghem, Tilburg, Elzas (France), Nieuwleusen, Zierikzee and Berghem-II.
Each family has his own name-index. Each name-index is divided in two parts, one part for the Christian names of the Hoes/Hoefs family-members and one part for the surnames of the allied family-members.
The Berghem family is divided in several branches, which are logically linked together and are coordinated by just one set of indexes.

This website is written in Dutch, because most of the family-members are born in the Netherlands.
In the 18th, 19th and 20th century some of them emigrated to other countries, like Germany, Canada and the United States of America.
Because their descendants don't speak Dutch some of the frequently used words or expressions are translated in English.
In the table below you can see that the differences between Dutch and English are not as big as you might think.
